Dewi Sartika



Dewi Sartika was a pioneer for the education for women in Indonesia. She was born on 4th December 1884. As a child, her talent already appeared, she used to pretend to be a teacher while playing with her friends. After her father died, she was raised by her uncle. She received an education of Sundanese culture from him. And she learned Western culture from a Dutch Resident Assistant lady.
Dewi Sartika had thought that every girls around her could get the opportunity to learn si many things in this world. Her struggle to establish a school was not useless, she was helped by his grandfather and Den Hamer, an Office Inspector of Teaching. On 1904, she succed to build a school named "Sekolah Isteri".
In 1906, she married with Raden Kanduruan Agah Suriawinata, he had the same dream with her. She passed away in 1947 in Tasikmalaya. She was formally acknowledged as a National Hero by the Indonesian government in 1966.
